Patient Preparation for Ultrasound

Whole Abdomen or
Upper Abdomen
  • Fasting for 4–6 hours before the exam (to reduce gas and improve visualization of liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen).
  • No smoking, chewing gum, or drinking colored/carbonated drinks during fasting period (these introduce gas).
  • Clear water is usually allowed in small amounts.

Pelvic Ultrasound
(Female / Male)
  • Full bladder needed – Drink 4–6 glasses of water (1–1.5 liters) about 1 hour before the exam and do not urinate until after the procedure.
  • This helps push away bowel loops and improves visualization of uterus, ovaries, prostate, and bladder.

Obstetric Ultrasound
  • Early pregnancy (1st trimester): Full bladder needed (same as pelvic).
  • 2nd and 3rd trimester: Usually no prep required, as the amniotic fluid already serves as a window.

Kidney / Urinary Tract
Ultrasound
  • Full bladder (drink water before the exam, no urination).
  • Sometimes mild fasting if combined with abdominal study.

Prostate
(Transabdominal)
  • Full bladder required.

Transvaginal /
Transrectal Ultrasound
  • Empty bladder required.
  • Usually no other prep, but doctor may give specific instructions if combined with other procedures.
